School Real Estate and Per Capita Bills Mail Date  NEW

August 1st is the mail date for both your School Real Estate and Per Capita bills.  It is your responsibility to notify the City in the event you do not receive them.

Per Capita is a head tax, waged on every resident over the age of 18 and this year remains at $35.  There are exemptions (based on income from all sources) available to those who qualify.  Upon receipt of your per capita bill, all proof of income must be brought into our office, and a form filled out and signed by the person to be exempt.  This process must be followed each year.

School Real Estate taxes will remain the same as last year at 59 mills.  Also, the State has allocated $460,208.26 for the Homestead/Farmstead approved parcels.  This money will be divided evenly among our 4,648 Homestead and 8 Farmstead  approved properties.  This equates to $98.88 per parcel for this year.  This amount will show up as a credit on your School tax bill.  The Homestead/Farmstead Act also offers those approved, 4 equal payments to satisfy their school district tax only.  Certain rules apply to these payments and they are explained on your bill.

Also the deadline for the tax rebate through the state has been extended to December 15th.  If you qualify and have not already done so, please check with your tax preparer.  We are working to change the look of future bills, and are hopeful to begin with the August 1st School Real Estate bill.  The planned bill will be a folded and sealed form with tear off ends.  Soon, all taxes will be formatted in this manner which will be a more personal, private means of mailing.
